How to pair Iberian Ham

How to pair Iberian Ham

Everyone knows that Iberian Ham is one of the spanish gastronomic gems. Despite having a unique flavour and texture, there are ways to elevate the tasting experience even further. In this post, we will explore together how to pair Iberian Ham, from wines to other drinks such as cavas or beers.

Iberian Ham and red wine, a classic

The combination of Iberian Ham and red wine is a classic. Red wine is perhaps the most popular choice when it comes to accompanying this delicacy, especially those with good acidity and moderate tannins. Before continuing, it should be noted that tannins are substances in wine that give it its astringent and bitter flavour.

That said, there are three red wines that best pair with Iberian Ham:

  1. Rioja Reserva. This wine has a perfect balance between fruit, acidity and barrel. Thanks to this balance, the flavour of the Iberian Ham is not overshadowed, but quite the opposite.
  2. Ribera del Duero Crianza. More robust and with notes of red fruits, which complement the intensity of the Iberian Ham very well.
  3. Garnacha. Although less popular, it is a lighter and fruitier wine, ideal for those looking for a less intense pairing.

Iberian Ham and white wine, a fresher combination

It is less common to combine Iberian Ham and white wine, however, it is a fresher combination. Look for a white wine with good acidity and body, for example:

  1. Albariño. A Galician wine, fresh and citrusy, cleanses the palate and enhances the flavour of the Iberian Ham.
  2. Verdejo. Its herbaceous notes complement the fatty texture of the ham.
  3. Chardonnay. It is the one that provides the most freshness, but it must be a well-balanced Chardonnay.

Pairing Iberian Ham with cavas and champagnes

The main characteristic of cavas and champagnes are their bubbles. Far from extinguishing it, these bubbles are an ideal accompaniment for Iberian Ham. Its effervescence helps to cleanse the palate between slices.

In this case, try a Cava Brut or Champagne Brut, the latter being more sophisticated.

Ham and beer, it is possible

I am sure there are many beer lovers around here. Well, combining ham and beer is possible. We give you some examples:

  1. Lager beer. Being fresh and light beers, they do not overload the palate.
  2. Amber Ale beer. If you are a person of contrasts, this is your option. These beers are more malty and caramelized, in contrast to the salty flavor of Iberian Ham.
  3. IPA beer. The most daring, due to its bitter taste, can nevertheless be a good accompaniment.

Iberian Ham and fortified wines, the most traditional option

Finally, Iberian Ham and fortified wines, the most traditional option.

Fino, manzanilla and oloroso, three good options that harmonize wonderfully with Iberian Ham.

In short, Iberian Ham is a very versatile product, which combines well with many drinks. The key to knowing how to pair Iberian Ham is to find the balance and be faithful to your tastes. If you have any questions, at Olalla Jamones we are at your disposal to resolve them.
